Heating troubleshootingBurning Smell When the Heater Turns On: Normal or Not?

By My AZ Pro Heating & Air Conditioning · Husband-and-wife owned, 30+ years of HVAC experience · Updated

A dusty, burning smell the first few times you turn on the heat each season is normal. Dust that settled on the heat strips or furnace burns off, and the smell should fade the same day. A strong electrical, plastic or rubber smell, any smoke, or a burning smell that keeps coming back is not normal. Turn the system off and call for service.

What the smell means

  • Dusty burning smell (usually normal)Months of Arizona dust settle on heat strips and furnace burners. It burns off the first few times the heat runs. Open a window and give it some time.
  • Electrical or hot-metal smellAn overheating blower motor, a failing capacitor or a loose wire. Turn the system off at the thermostat and call.
  • Burning plastic or rubberMelting wire insulation, a failing motor, or something that fell into a vent or duct. Turn it off and call.
  • Musty smellMoisture or a dirty coil or drain pan. Not dangerous, but worth a cleaning.
  • Rotten egg or gas smellPossible gas leak. Don't touch light switches; get everyone out, then call your gas company or 911 from outside.

What you can do

  • If it smells like dust, let the heat run 15 to 30 minutes with a window open
  • Replace a dirty filter, since a clogged filter can make parts run hot
  • Check floor vents for toys, décor or debris
  • Keep storage away from the furnace or air handler
  • If the smell is electrical, plastic or smoky, turn the system off and call 833-692-9776

Questions & answers

Common questions

See all our FAQs or call 833-MyAZPro.

Is it normal for my heater to smell like burning when I first turn it on?

Yes, a dusty smell is normal the first few times you run the heat each season. It should fade the same day. If it doesn't, or it smells electrical or like plastic, turn it off and call.

How long should the burning dust smell last?

Usually a short time, while the dust burns off. If the smell lasts more than a day or keeps coming back, have the system checked.

What does an electrical burning smell from my heater mean?

It often means an overheating blower motor, a failing capacitor or a wiring problem. Turn the system off and call for service.

What should I do if I smell gas?

Leave the home right away without switching anything on or off, then call your gas company or 911 from outside.

Can a dirty filter cause a burning smell?

Yes. A clogged filter restricts airflow, so parts run hotter and dust builds up. Replace it, or ask us about once-a-year upgraded filters.
